Many years ago, a mild mannered and quite shy 18 year old kid
auditioned for the lead in his Senior Class Musical, "Fiddler on the
Roof." He really had no business taking such a chance because he had
no training, no experience and had never even worked on the stage
crew for any previous school production.

But the moment called him to try. He knew in his own heart that he
had the talent to do this after spending many years alone with his
imagination and singing along with his favorite music. With a
strength he had never felt before, he knew that he had to do this -
no more shyness, no more fear, it was time to step out for something
that mattered. After spending several hours preparing for this
moment he took the stage in front of not only the director and the
entire production team of the show - the room was also filled with
every other classmate who was auditioning for the show.

Standing there on shaky knees with his peers watching, he gave
everything he had from the first note to the last. And when it was
over, no one in the entire room was sitting down. The applause
echoed through his high school's gym as he walked back to his seat
shaking hands with the still-standing crowd. His first audition was
a huge hit.

Later on, when he excitedly came home to tell his parents that he'd
secured the coveted lead role in the biggest production of the year,
the first response he got was - "That's nice honey, but it's time to
take out the trash." "Trash? Did you not hear me?" he thought.
Surprisingly, he didn't get hurt by this. He chalked it up to them
not having a frame of reference for what he had done. They weren't
actors and had never been a part of this world before. His new found
confidence told him that they would come around once they
experienced what the others had seen.

The show turned out to be a huge hit, but...

Crowds stood and applauded just like they did at that first audition
and he discovered a power to move people that was before then
unimaginable. He rode a wave of praise and attention that made
others believe that this was his future - he was going to be an
actor. But common sense told him otherwise at that point, for a
couple of reasons. First, it is extremely difficult to make a living
as an actor at any level, even with this new found success, the odds
over the long term were not in his favor. And second, he had already
secured a scholarship to college in another field, one that provided
much better long-term security and potential for success. As much as
he relished the success he achieved, he felt he needed to go with
the sure thing and build a future that made more sense.

However, his studies in college turned out to be more challenging
than he anticipated. College life was great fun, there were so many
things to do - all while being on his own, away from parents for the
first time in his life. As you might expect, something had to give
for all this fun and his grades suffered. They didn't just suffer,
they plummeted to the point where he was assigned a counselor whose
job it was to either save him from flunking out or helping him find
another school. Being a better than average student, he had never
been faced with such a life or death situation when it came to
school. But, he took this very seriously and used this as an
opportunity to clarify his path and his purpose going forward.
Pulling himself out of the hole he had dug would take quite an
effort and he had a much better chance of succeeding if he knew
without question what he wanted to achieve. Should he continue with
the career path that brought him to this school in the first place,
or was there something else out there?

What do you want for the "rest of your life?"

One phrase kept popping into his head as he searched his soul for
answers - "The rest of my life." He saw that these choices that were
in front of him would set the path of the rest of his life. And that
being the case, it better be the life that would not only make him a
living but that would also make him happy. Well, as he started to
realize that his current path was not as appealing as he once
thought; the idea of pursuing an acting career became a more and
more vivid possibility. After all, it had already given him the
greatest sense of accomplishment and purpose that he had ever known
and as much hard work as it was, many of the basics of acting came
very naturally to him. That had to mean something. But very few
people can make a living as an actor? How would he reconcile that?
Well, the final revelation of this period of discovery was that he
decided it was more important to do what he really wanted to do
instead of doing what was expected or what was safe. And somehow,
some way, if it meant that much to him - he'd figure out a way to
make money at it. With that, an acting career was born.
